Stainless Steel Sink Thickness Explained
Thickness is the number most often quoted and least often understood in a stainless steel sink RFQ. It moves the price, it moves the freight cost, and it changes how the finished sink feels to the end user. It also has hard physical limits that decide whether a shape can be produced at all.
This article explains what the millimetre figure actually measures, what changes as it goes up or down, and how to write it into a purchase specification so that quotations from different suppliers can be compared honestly. It is written for importers, distributors, online retailers and kitchen furniture manufacturers buying residential sinks for resale.
What the thickness figure measures
The figure is the nominal thickness of the stainless steel sheet before forming. It is a material input, not a measurement of the finished bowl.
That distinction matters. Pressing stretches the sheet. A bowl drawn from 0.8 mm sheet is thinner than 0.8 mm at the deepest part of the draw and at the corner radii, because that is where the material has been stretched furthest. The rim and the flat areas stay close to the input thickness. Nobody in the industry quotes finished-wall thickness at the base of the bowl, and any supplier who offers you a single number for the whole bowl is quoting the sheet, whatever they call it.
So when you compare "0.6 mm" from one supplier with "0.6 mm" from another, you are comparing the sheet they start with. The two finished sinks can still differ, because draw depth and forming method change how much that sheet thins out.
Thickness bands used in our range
We can state two model figures with confidence:

For any other model in the range, ask us for the thickness on that specific model rather than assuming a family value. Thickness is set per model and per order, and we are not going to publish a blanket figure that turns out to be wrong for the item you actually order. If a model page on this site does not state a thickness, treat it as not yet confirmed and put it in your enquiry.
Thickness and rigidity
Rigidity is what the buyer's customer experiences as quality. A rigid sink does not flex under a full basin of water, does not move when someone leans on the drainboard, and does not deform during installation.
Thicker material is stiffer. That is straightforward physics and it holds across every sink on the market. What is less obvious is that thickness is not the only contributor:
- Bowl geometry. A deeper bowl with tighter corner radii is inherently stiffer than a shallow one, for the same sheet.
- Rim design. The formed edge acts as a stiffening flange. A well-formed rim can add more rigidity than a marginal increase in sheet thickness.
- Support at installation. A sink that is properly clamped to a flat countertop behaves very differently from the same sink hanging on four brackets.
The practical consequence for a buyer is that you cannot rescue a poorly formed sink by adding thickness, and you should not dismiss a thinner sink that is well formed and correctly installed. Judge a sample by pressing on the flat areas and the drainboard, not by reading the spec sheet.
Thickness and noise
Thicker material vibrates less and therefore drums less when water hits it. Again, true, and again, only part of the story. Sound damping pads and undercoating on the outside of the bowl do more for perceived noise than a step up in sheet thickness, and they cost less.
We are not publishing decibel figures. We have not run acoustic tests on our own production, and reproducing a general industry number as if it described our sinks would be misleading. If noise is a selling point in your channel, specify damping pads explicitly — see sound damping pads and undercoating — rather than paying for thickness and hoping.
Thickness and pressing limits: why deep bowls need more material
This is the constraint most buyers never hear about, and it is the one that most often forces a specification change.
Drawing a bowl means stretching a flat sheet into a three-dimensional shape in one operation. There is a limit to how far a given sheet can be stretched before it thins critically or tears. The deeper the bowl and the tighter the corner radius, the more severe the draw.
Practically:
- A deep bowl cannot be produced reliably from the thinnest sheet in the range. The material runs out.
- Tight corner radii on a pressed sink increase the local stretch and push the same way.
- A large single bowl is a harder draw than two smaller bowls of the same total area.
So if you send us a drawing for a deep, large, tight-cornered pressed bowl at the bottom of the thickness range, the honest answer is that the combination is not producible, not that it will cost a little more. When that happens, the options are a shallower bowl, a larger corner radius, a thicker sheet, or a handmade (welded) construction where the geometry is not draw-limited.
Thickness on handmade sinks
Handmade sinks are folded and welded from panels rather than drawn from one sheet, so the draw limit does not apply. The panel does not have to survive being stretched into shape, which is why handmade construction can hold a tight square inner corner and a deep bowl at the same time.
That changes the role of thickness. On a handmade sink, thickness is about rigidity, weld quality at the seams and perceived heft — not about whether the shape can be formed. Handmade sinks are generally specified at the upper end of the thickness range for that reason, and it is a supplementary in-house line for us with a minimum order quantity of 50 pieces per model.

Thickness, weight and freight cost
Thickness is the main driver of unit weight, and unit weight is the main driver of freight cost per piece.
Sinks are dense and awkward. On most routes into Russia and Belarus a container will hit its weight allowance long before it fills, which means every extra kilogram of steel displaces sellable product. Moving a model up one thickness band raises the material cost and raises the landed cost again through freight.
We do not publish freight figures or transit times, and we quote EXW and FOB only — the shipping leg is arranged by you or your forwarder. But when you model landed cost, treat thickness as a two-part cost, not a one-part cost. The right question is whether the extra weight earns its place in the container.
Declared thickness versus measured thickness
A recurring complaint in the Russian-language trade discussion is sinks arriving thinner than the declared figure. It is worth understanding what is and is not happening.
Sheet is supplied to a tolerance. A nominal 0.8 mm sheet is not exactly 0.8 mm across the coil, and a legitimate supplier working to a legitimate tolerance can deliver material slightly under nominal. Separately, and quite differently, some suppliers simply declare a thickness they are not using.
You cannot tell these apart from a spec sheet. You can tell them apart by measuring. If thickness is commercially important to you:
- Measure the flat rim area of a sample with a micrometer or ultrasonic gauge, not the bowl base, which is thinned by drawing.
- Agree in writing which point on the sink is the reference measurement.
- State that the declared thickness applies to the incoming sheet and specify the tolerance you expect.
We will confirm the sheet thickness for your order in the quotation. We will not confirm a tolerance band we have not verified for that model — if you need a tolerance written into the contract, ask and we will check it before agreeing rather than after.
How to specify thickness in an RFQ
Put it in the enquiry in this form:

Sending depth and corner radius together with thickness is what lets us tell you immediately whether the combination is producible. Sending thickness alone means a round trip.
If you are building a multi-model assortment, state the thickness per model. A range that runs the upper band on flagship models and a lower band on entry positions is a perfectly normal commercial structure — it just has to be a decision rather than an accident.
What we supply
Pressed (drawn) stainless steel sinks are our core in-house line, with a minimum order quantity of 200 pieces per model. Handmade (welded) stainless steel sinks are a supplementary in-house line at 50 pieces per model. Quartz composite sinks are supplied to us by a partner factory, at 20 pieces per model, and thickness is not a meaningful parameter for that material.
Production lead time is 35 days. We quote EXW and FOB. The under-sink fitting set is included; the faucet is not.
