Export Packaging for Kitchen Sinks: Bent Rims and Returns
Where transit damage actually happens
Damage is concentrated at a small number of handling events, and knowing which ones tells you where to spend.
- Loading and stuffing at origin. Cartons dropped a short distance onto a concrete floor, or stacked without regard to which face is load-bearing.
- Container movement. A container that is not tightly stuffed lets the load shift. Repeated small impacts over a long voyage do more cumulative damage than one large one.
- Discharge and cross-docking. Every time the load is broken down and rebuilt, individual cartons are handled by people who did not pack them.
- Last-mile, for direct dispatch. A sink handled as a single parcel by a courier network is subject to handling that container freight never applies.
The first and last of those are where most damage originates. Container transit itself is comparatively gentle if the load is stuffed correctly.
Why the rim is the weak point
The rim is the thinnest unsupported structure on the sink and the one that has to stay perfectly flat for the product to be usable.
A sink is stiff through its bowl and weak across its rim flange. A point load on the rim â a corner impact, another carton's edge pressing down, a strap tightened over an unsupported span â bends the flange. The deformation is often small, sometimes only visible when the sink is laid on a flat surface, and it is still enough to leave a gap at the countertop or to rock on installation.
That is why the rim, not the bowl, dictates packaging design. Protect the bowl and bend the rim and you have a write-off. The acceptance test for rim flatness is covered in rim flatness, cut-out accuracy and drainage checks.
Carton construction
The carton has two jobs: hold the sink in a fixed position, and absorb the energy of an impact before it reaches the rim.
What matters in practice:
- Board specification. A heavier, multi-wall board resists crush and edge impact better than a light single-wall carton. We are not going to publish grammage or burst-strength figures on this page, because those are supplier-specific values we have not verified for publication. Ask us what board specification is used for your order and we will confirm it in writing.
- Fit. A carton that is oversized lets the sink move, and a moving sink hits the inside of its own box. A carton that is undersized forces the rim against the wall. Fit is as important as board weight.
- Stacking orientation. Cartons should be marked and stuffed so the load path runs through the strongest axis. A carton designed to be stacked upright and loaded on its side loses most of its strength.
- Closure. Tape or staples that fail mid-transit turn a protected sink into a loose one.
Inner protection and corner reinforcement
Inside the carton, the job is to keep the rim off the wall and to spread any impact.
Common approaches, in rough order of effectiveness for this product:
- Moulded or die-cut corner protectors around the rim corners, which is where impacts land
- Foam or expanded-polyethylene edge sections running along the rim flange
- A rigid inner frame or sleeve that carries the load to the carton walls rather than to the sink
- Film or paper facing on the finished surface to prevent scuffing â this protects appearance, not geometry, and should not be mistaken for structural protection
The distinction between surface protection and structural protection is worth being explicit about with a supplier. A sink wrapped beautifully in film and sitting loose in an oversized carton is unprotected.
Palletising versus loose loading
Loose-loaded cartons use container volume most efficiently and are handled individually at every touch point. Palletised loads are handled by forklift, are far less exposed to individual mishandling, and cost volume.
Which is right depends on the route and the receiving end:
- If the container is discharged directly to your own warehouse with a dock and a forklift, palletising usually pays for itself.
- If the load is cross-docked, broken down and rebuilt, palletising protects it through the part of the journey you cannot supervise.
- If you are volume-constrained and the receiving end is careful, loose loading is defensible.
Sinks are dense, so a container will typically reach its weight limit before it is full â which means the volume that palletising costs is often volume you were not going to use. Run the arithmetic for your own route before assuming pallets are a luxury.
Packaging for direct-to-consumer dispatch
If any part of your volume ships as single parcels to end customers, that stock needs different packaging, and it needs to be specified at the order, not improvised in your warehouse.
Parcel networks apply handling that container freight does not: individual drops, conveyor sortation, stacking under unpredictable loads. Export cartons designed for palletised container transit are not parcel-rated, and repacking on arrival costs labour on every unit.
If you know a proportion of the order is going direct to consumers, say so in the enquiry and it can be quoted as a separate packaging specification for that portion.
Labelling and handling marks
Labelling reduces damage caused by people who cannot see what is inside.
Worth specifying: orientation arrows and a fragile mark on the correct faces; the model reference and quantity legible without opening; a clear indication of the maximum stacking height; and any barcode or SKU labelling your own warehouse system needs, applied at origin so your goods-in does not have to relabel a container by hand.
Labelling requirements are cheap to build into an order and expensive to retrofit. Send them with the enquiry.
What to specify in your RFQ
Put packaging in the enquiry rather than leaving it to be assumed:

Ask for the packaging specification to be confirmed in the proforma invoice. A packaging standard agreed in an email and absent from the order document is not an agreement.
Inspection on arrival
Whatever the packaging, run an incoming check that catches problems while they are still provable.
A workable procedure: photograph the load in the container before it is unloaded; record any crushed, wet or torn cartons before opening them; open a defined sample rather than only the cartons that look damaged, since rim deformation frequently occurs inside an intact box; and check the rim of every opened sample on a flat surface rather than by eye.
Document with dated photographs that show the carton and the sink together. A claim supported by photographs taken at discharge is a different conversation from one raised three weeks later.
We do not publish damage-rate statistics and we are not going to offer a damage-free guarantee â no supplier controls the handling chain end to end, and a promise like that is worth nothing when it is tested. What we will do is confirm the packaging specification for your order in writing and pack to it.
